Why do PBX systems need a specific format?
WAV 16-Bit PCM
An uncompressed linear audio format, relatively high quality. This is the most common input format for greeting messages, voice menus and hold music on most digital and VoIP-based PBX and IVR systems - including systems based on Asterisk, FreePBX, 3CX and other common cloud systems.
μ-law (CCITT / G.711)
A standard 8-bit telephony compression format, originally developed for digital telephone networks in North America. Older phone systems and gateways, as well as some analog systems, require this specific format. If your PBX provider specified "μ-law" or "CCITT" as a requirement - this is the right option for you.

No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser, using Web Audio technology. The file is never uploaded or stored on any server - it stays on your computer throughout the entire process.
What's the difference between WAV 16-Bit PCM and μ-law?
WAV 16-Bit PCM is an uncompressed linear audio format, relatively high quality and with a larger file size. μ-law (also known as CCITT μ-law or G.711) is a standard 8-bit telephony compression format, smaller in size, required mainly by older or analog phone systems and gateways.
What kinds of source files can I upload to the tool?
You can upload almost any common audio file - MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG and more - depending on the formats your browser supports. The tool will resample the file to 8kHz mono and convert it to the format you chose.
Is the conversion free and unlimited?
Yes, the tool is completely free with no usage limits.
Can I also just convert to regular MP3?
Yes - in addition to the PBX formats, you can choose MP3 for general conversion, for listening, sharing and storage. Note that MP3 is generally not suitable for uploading to a phone system or IVR - that's what the WAV formats are for.
Which PBX systems support these formats?
Most digital PBX and IVR systems, including systems based on Asterisk, FreePBX, 3CX and other common VoIP systems, support WAV 16-Bit PCM at 8kHz. The μ-law format is required mainly by older phone systems and gateways, or when your PBX provider explicitly specifies it as a requirement.
